The call was placed on a Motorola prototype cell phone, now referred to as “the brick”.

The First Commercial Cell Phone

In the 90s, the entertainment industry was largely deregulated, allowing for networks to beginning owning the TV shows that they showed. In my opinion this has not been a good thing, allowing the big corporate networks to basically call the shots, effectively stifling creativity. It’s too bad, really!

Thankfully, though, we can still watch these great family TV shows, like Cheers, Family Ties, Growing Pains and, of course, Fame.

Fame is a wonderful show to share with your kids. It’s inspirational and hopeful. Please enjoythese episodes of this hit 80s TV drama courtesy of Hulu.Com.

1985 Horror

A small group of military officers and scientists dwell in an underground bunker as the world above is overrun by zombies.

This moive is considered on of Romero’s best zombie movies and is a great example of the 80s horror genre, released in 1985.

There are many ideas for 80s costumes and 80s theme parties to choose from. Creating a killer 80s costume for Halloween is a snap for adults, teens and kids with video tutorials and more great 80s party information.

While toy wars happen in stores all across the country today, there was nothing in history more fought over than Cabbage Patch Dolls. These dolls hit the market in a big way and parents rushed to find the latest dolls for their children. In fact, they even purchased diapers for the dolls at local grocery stores!

Care Bears

Still a popular item today, Care Bears were even more popular in the 80s. The original clan of bears even led to a wildly successful television show and a host of movies. Today Care Bears include many other animal types and accessories.

Glo Worms

If you were a child of the 80s, chances are you slept with a Glo Worm at one point in your youth. These stuffed worms glowed in the dark every time you hugged them. The line included books, night lights, videos and other accessories. The item was a success not only because it was adorable, but it acted as a nightlight and kept children happy in the dark!

Micro Machines

Remember that annoying actor in the 80s who could talk 60 miles a minute? If you do, you probably remember the Micro Machines he advertised. These tiny cars were only a little over an inch long, but were all the rage in the 80s. Parents could purchase small cities to go with the small cars. They were very travel-friendly and took up very little space!

Masters of the Universe

He-Man and Skeletor are names still much remembered today. The cartoon characters were some of the most popular boy toys of the 80s. The toys were so popular they’ve traveled into the present! They are still offered for children today, in updated forms.

The Cosby Show

Bill Cosby led 80s TV shows into an entirely different level with the emergence of The Cosby Show in 1984. The view of the show as a normal family life representation appealed to many television watchers. The adorable family, paired with amazing comedy by Cosby and other cast members will be remembered for years to come!

MacGyver

Those who loved a good adventure show could tell you the only person on television that could ever disable a bomb with a shoe string and a piece of bubblegum. MacGyver started in 1985 and continued into the early 90s. It was an exciting way for watchers to see action, without the gore and danger. Today’s television action shows are much darker, while MacGyver was family-friendly all the way!

Punky Brewster

Although the show only lasted two years, Punky Brewster was among the most popular shows of the 80s. Re-runs still appear on television today and the character of Punky Brewster is still widely recognized. The show appealed mostly to younger girls and teens, making Punky not only an entertaining character but also a fashionista of the 80s.

Family Ties

One of the most beloved television families of the 80s was the Seaver family. With a multitude of children, the parents showed viewers each week how to deal with regular family issues in a positive way. Kirk Cameron was a teen heart throb of the 80s and much due to this hit success show!

OK, so I Feel Love may be a ‘70s song but, in my view, it really set the trends for the ‘80s by blending a hard core synth track (which had hitherto been the province of techno bands such as Kraftwerk) with crooning disco vocals (which had previously normally been sunk to a funk band or orchestral backing). In fact, ‘I Feel Love’ was not only the greatest disco song ever but was also one of the most influential pop songs. So, while Jackson may have won the vote, I am going to play Donna Summer’s wonderful I Feel love…

Boys of the 80s loved their Saturday morning cartoons. Transformers, GI Joe and He-Man were among the most popular. Cartoons in the 80s were less violent and widely accepted as positive forms of entertainment for children.

Today, the products inspired by these 80s cartoons are still being sold and modified. There are new movies coming to the big screen featuring remakes of these 80s storylines and characters.

Rainbow Bright, Jem and Care Bears were three of the most popular cartoons of the 80s. While some can still be caught on television randomly, they are most often only captured on video. These fun cartoons yielded a great deal of merchandise throughout the 80s.

Today, stores are beginning to sell their merchandise again! New Care Bears are seen on the shelves at every toy stores, beside Cabbage Patch Kids.

Channels such as Boomerang are allowing today’s generations to view and fall in love with 80s cartoons, much like the children of that time did.

Parents are excited to watch their old favorites with their toddlers and teens are finding a fascination with them as well. Overall, the cartoons of the 80s made such an impact, they are still wildly popular today.

Feathered Hair Was Hot

Thanks to the beautiful Heather Locklear feathered hair was a raging trend in the 80s. This wind swept style pulled the hair back from the face, in a feathering layer. While it was most popular in the 80s, it started back in the 70s.

Jheri Curls All Around

Michael Jackson fans likely remember the notorious Jheri Curl of the 80s. This African American hairstyle was incredibly popular. It was actually a product used to relax African American hair. Using this chemical product, hair maintained a constant wet-curly look. The hair style was so hot it was known to catch on fire if anywhere near a spark or flame. In fact, it is rumored Michael Jackson’s hair caught on fire during a commercial he was shooting, thanks to a loose spark!

Punk Hair Made Parents Cringe

With the punk and hair bands of the 80s came punk hair styles. Boys grew their hair out to new lengths while girls often doused their do with colors like hot pink. Mohawks were incredibly popular from the punk crowd, while the hair band crowd opted for hair-sprayed rats nests. From crimped hair to teased ponytails, the punk style of 80s hair is likely the most remembered today.

The trick to having a blast at a costume party is to choose a great costume that is not only entertaining, but also comfortable.

With a 80s costume, comfort is included! The 80s were a time of laid-back fashion and you can incorporate that aspect into your costume-wear.

For those who loved the punk-rocker portion of the 80s era, a 80s punk rock costume is perfect! Women can grab a pair of fishnet stockings, a jean skirt, and a tank or tee for an easy costume.

Women are pairing interesting patterned tights under jean skirts and dresses. Leggings are also being worn under skirts, dresses and as pants paired with long shirts. They are fashionable, inexpensive and comfortable!

Jeans

While jeans have been a trendy item to own for years, they’ve changed with the times. Bell-bottom jeans were quite popular in the 60s and 70s. For 80s clothing styles however, jeans got tighter and more tapered. The legs were all drawn in to taper at the ankle.

Today, these jeans are being labeled as “skinny jeans” and are selling like hotcakes! These slim jeans are very familiar to the hot styles of 80s clothes, but with a new name.

Shoes

Shoe stores all over the country are selling knockoffs of the very familiar 80’s fashion, Jellies. These shoes made from plastic were hotter than flip flops in the 80s and are making a comeback today.

Today’s styles are a bit frugal in design, as they aren’t as constricting to the feet. More comfortable and in a wide range of colors, they’re a hot trend for today’s teens.

Eddie’s planning to quit acting and get back into stand-up comedy.

He’s been a top box draw for thirty years. Eddie Murphy’s made some timeless films. 80s movies like the Beverly Hills Cop series and Trading places are eighties classics.

Let’s hope Eddie’s serious about doing stand-up again and doesn’t fade away like Jerry Seinfeld and many others.

In preparation for this article, I did a bit of research on the band and found a few facts that I did not know about them.

The band, named after the bumbling detectives from Herge’s TinTin, first formed in 1977. Although this site is 80’s based, the band didn’t get famous until the 80’s.

Tom Bailey was a part of the original lineup. Arriving in London, The ‘twins’ had very little money and lived as squatters. Allanah Currie, who joined the Thompson Twins later was also a squatter and that was how they first met. Joe Leeway joined the twins in 1981 when the first album was recorded. Even though Currie had sang on the their first album (a product of…..participation), she was not classed as a full member of the group.

The group became famous by hitting the UK Singles chart and US billboard 100 in 1983 with their songs Lies and Love on your side.

Hold Me Now was released in late 1983 which hit the top 10 in the UK and US. Further hit singles followed in 1984: “Doctor! Doctor!”; “You Take Me Up” (reaching number two and their biggest UK hit); “Sister of Mercy”; and “The Gap” with its Middle Eastern rhythms (this song was not released in the UK).

The corresponding album, Into The Gap, was one of the bestsellers of the year, and topped the British album charts. The band also commenced a world tour in support of the album.

Joe Leeway left the band in 1986, and after this the band had limited success. Whether this was because of the trio not together I am not sure.

1988 saw the birth of a child for Tom and Alannah who had become a couple. They however, didn’t get married until 1991. They actually moved to New Zealand in 1992 with their (now) two children.

According to Wikipedia, 1991’s Queer would be the band’s swansong, and was supported by various techno-induced singles under the moniker of Feedback Max (in the UK) to disguise club DJs of the source of the records. The single “Come Inside” reached number seven in the U.S. Dance Chart and number one in the UK Dance Chart. However, once it was discovered that the Thompson Twins were behind the record, sales dropped and the album never had a UK release.

Bailey and Currie split up in 2003, and are now divorced. They both left New Zealand and live separately in Britain, but are still close friends.

Cartoon t-shirts are a fashion trend still hanging on for the long haul. The signature 80s cartoon t-shirts include shirts boasting characters from Smurfs, Strawberry Shortcake and Care Bears.

Entire stores are being set up, devoted to t-shirts of the 80s.

Teens and those in their 20s are still buying these items, hot off the shelves!

Fashion experts predict 80s fashion will hang around for years to come, moving in and out of the trend areas.

Much like the 70s, the fashion is well grounded in memories for much of Generation X.

The Chinese people and the world understand how important the site is as China puts it’s best foot forward to the rest the world during this 29th Olympiad. The 4-5 billion other people on our planet are seeing China’s potential as the global economies largest player.

I have been lucky to see so many tremendously historical events, especially in the late 1980’s with the end of “The Cold War”. China will be the most productive economic powerhouse in the world. This will likely happen very quickly. Currently China is the third largest economy in the world, behind China and the United States.

I think in a decade, the U.S. will see many more tourists from China as millions “get upped” and find better lives in the overcrowded, polluted cities (growing pains, nothing more; they’ll get the smog situation figured out, I’m sure).

I, for one love to see the Chinese people prosper. It’s the dream of democracy and capitalism. Hard work, teamwork, being a productive human are just a few of the virtuous qualities of an free, democratic, capitalist society.

Something has been missing in American society for many decades. Maybe it’s a work ethic thing or maybe it’s more of the idea that what people can accomplish together is exponentially greater than anything an individual might be able to accomplish.

China will have it’s struggles and they will be many. But they helped us build our railroad and I know they can overcome anything.

1989: Massacre in Tiananmen Square

Several hundred civilians have been shot dead by the Chinese army during a bloody military operation to crush a democratic protest in Peking’s (Beijing) Tiananmen Square.

As tanks rumbled through the capital’s streets late on 3 June, the army moved into the square from several directions, randomly firing on unarmed protesters.

The injured were rushed to hospital on bicycle rickshaws by frantic residents shocked by the army’s sudden and extreme response to the peaceful mass protest. Demonstrators, mainly students, had occupied the square for seven weeks, refusing to move until their demands for democratic reform were met. The protests began with a march by students in memory of former party leader Hu Yaobang, who had died a week before.

But as the days passed, millions of people from all walks of life joined in, angered by widespread corruption and calling for democracy. Tonight’s military offensive came after several failed attempts to persuade the protesters to leave.

Throughout the day the government warned it would do whatever it saw necessary to clamp down on what it described as “social chaos”. But even though violence was expected, the ferocity of the attack took many by surprise, bringing condemnation from around the world.

US President George Bush said he deeply deplored the use of force, and UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher said she was “shocked and appalled by the shootings”.Amid the panic and confusion students could be heard shouting “fascists stop killing,” and “down with the government”.

The Regeneration Tour Kicks Off Today

As the popularity of video programs on some cable and network stations was rising, MTV made history while taking advantage of this trend.

They led off with the 1979 hit “Video Killed the Radio Star” by the Trevor Horn-led Buggles (from the album The Age of Plastic).

Among America’s new celebrities were the VJs: Martha Quinn, Nina Blackwood, JJ Jackson, Mark Goodman and Alan Hunter.

More would come in later years, but these were the originals. MTV was a huge boon for New Wave music.

Bands quickly learned how to make the most of all the publicity they were getting from their well-produced videos that those

mini-movies turned many songs that would go otherwise unplayed by mainstream radio into major hits.

In a past interview Stan Ridgway referred to MTV’s role in Wall of Voodoo’s success as people who saw the videos called radio stations requesting artists like them, Missing Persons, The Little Girls, Berlin and others that they were “forced to play them” (When I was doing all-talk radio, I would always say that the market should decide what’s played instead of a bunch of industry suits and their inadequate “market tests”).

Is it safe to say that the new wave might have never been as strong without MTV? That statement was true in the network’s early days: often, the VJs would play, promote and encourage new music.

Where else would we have seen videos for “How to Pick Up Girls” by the Little Girls, “Hyperactive” by Thomas Dolby, “Slow Dancing” by Lindsey Buckingham or “Never You Done That” by General Public on a regular basis? Those were the days when MTV was actually cutting edge.

Of course, it all ended over the late 1980s. It seemed harmless when they integrated extra shows (aside from just videos) into the lineup like :The Young Ones” or “IRS’s The Cutting Edge,” but soon the 90s would come and we would see less videos and juvenile idiocy like “Singled Out” and “The Tom Green Show.”

Then they set off a Pandora’s Box of irritating reality shows to come by airing “The Real World.”

This was a show putting several people who most of us would never want to hang out with anyway into a home and watch them all be annoying and whiny together. Thanks to the 90s MTV programmers, other cable and broadcast networks would soon offer America such dreck as “Survivor,” “Big Brother” and “I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here!”

Putting aside the bad, MTV’s impact on new wave and music overall in the early to mid 1980s is reason enough to honor its birthday on Revenge of the 80s.

It did not hit me at the time that they were looking to make it a musical.

A musical featuring the great new wave tunes of the time might sound intriguing, but most of those types of movies (like plays) feature the actors attempting to sing the tunes instead of the original artists.

The music is the reason that the movie was so great in the first place; otherwise it would have been a run-of-the-mill “chick flick” in 1983 with the same old “boy from poor background falls in love with rich girl” story.

While it is true that Nicholas Cage was brilliant in that role, the soundtrack is arguably remembered more as classic than the movie.

“Valley Girl” — The Musical?

There are some excellent 80s fashion ideas in this movie. I watched this again (I’ve seen it just a few times), but this time in High Resolution. It looks great.
