Valley Girl The Movie Musical?

I was quite happy after first reading about the plan to remake the classic 80s movie “Valley Girl,” a project that is being led by film makers Matt Smith and Sean Bailey.

It did not hit me at the time that they were looking to make it a musical.

A musical featuring the great new wave tunes of the time might sound intriguing, but most of those types of movies (like plays) feature the actors attempting to sing the tunes instead of the original artists.

The music is the reason that the movie was so great in the first place; otherwise it would have been a run-of-the-mill “chick flick” in 1983 with the same old “boy from poor background falls in love with rich girl” story.

While it is true that Nicholas Cage was brilliant in that role, the soundtrack is arguably remembered more as classic than the movie.

What Happened in 1980s Decade - Year by Year

The ’80s was a decade of significant political and cultural change. These events have an impact on our lives today and will into the future in so many ways.

There were also, admittedly, trivial or relatively unimportant events that took place in the 1980’s. Here are some of the events that ranged from the deadly serious to the ridiculous.

So whether you loved the 1980s or hated it, there’s something here for everyone who lived during this decade to bring back those nostalgic memories.

1980

  • The $40 million “Heaven’s Gate” took a dive after it’s Thanksgiving premier.
  • Despite a recession, auction prices started to soar. Lighting the way: A Tiffany Lamp sold for $360,000.
  • Tampons caused toxic shock syndrome, resulting in 42 deaths.
  • In Mexico city, Yin-Yin delivered the first giant panda born outside China, but smothered the cub shortly thereafter.
  • “Friday the 13th” was a big enough grosser to scare up seven sequels by the end of the decade.
  • Rubik’s Cube, the product of a Hungarian inventor, tormented puzzlers trying to find the correct variation out of 43.2 quintillion possibilities.
  • Dialects were Meryl Streep’s signature. Her New York whine in “Kramer vs. Kramer” won her an Oscar.

Look Back To The 1980’s

It was the decade of decadence. It was about glitz and glamour as well as baubles, bangles, and beads.

Elizabeth Taylor dropped in for Luke and Lauras wedding. Lady Diana Spencer joined the Royal Family. Nighttime soaps like Dallas and Dynasty ruled the airwaves. Margaret Thatcher ruled the United Kingdom. Tom Cruise felt the need for speed. Gordon Gekko taught Wall Street whiz kids that greed was good. Material Girl Madonna made her musical debut. When did all this take place?

We can only be talking about that terrific time period - the excellent eighties.

Here are twenty-one ways for you to verify that you belong to (or belong in) the 1980s.

1. You tried breakdancing. Now youre trying to figure out how you didnt break any bones doing it.

2. You know that Molly Ringwald was an original cast member on Facts of Life. (Now youre singing both of the shows theme songs.)

3. You remember paying by the minute for long distance telephone service and you can still hear the tune from the phone company commercial when they encouraged you to “reach out - reach out and touch someone.”

Colorful and Stylish 80’s Fashion

80s Physical Picture 80’s fashion history is memorable and quite distinctive. 1980s fashion favored applied decoration on suits and T-shirts and bead work on clothing which all pandered to the ideals of a time of conspicuous consumption.

The 1980’s was an unforgettable era in fashion and style much of which is actually still in style to this day.

Clothing is style, a sign of success, and an identity marker of whom you are; where you belong; and whom you classify yourself with. In the Eighties more than any other decade people were concerned with status, power and glamor. 1980s Fashion history shows that as fashion for female identity in the workplace took hold, so shoulder width grew.

Eighties fashion for the fashionable was all about extremes: shock had its value, and the idea that everyday women were wearing shoulder pads and big brass buttons to claim their share of the glass ceiling workplace was laughable.

1980s clothing styles are back on the shelves now. We’ll examine what makes eighties fashion endure the test of time.
